New Hope Rehabilitation Centre Opens!

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and what better way to celebrate than sharing some very exciting news! We are delighted to announce that after over a year of hard work, this week we opened New Hope Rehabilitation Centre BidiBidi with our partners SwissLimbs.

This new centre has been a dream of HHAs for many years.  Placed in BidiBidi Refugee Settlement in Northern Uganda, one of the largest settlements in the world, this centre will support a population of around 240,000+ South Sudanese refugees alongside local Uganda host communities.  The centre will provide wheelchairs, prosthetic and orthotics and physiotherapy to thousands of people in the coming years.

This week we opened the wheelchair department and were delighted to receive our first patients.  On the first day we fitted 3 paediatric wheelchairs, all complex cases, but with life-changing outcomes for children who previously didn’t have a wheelchair. The kids and their families were very excited!

We also received a container of new prosthetic, orthotic and physiotherapy equipment from SwissLimbs which the team will start assembling in the next week, allowing us to also open that service very soon!  Our East Africa team have also been out on location training up our Community Based Rehabilitation team so we have a smooth referral process of patients from the community.

A very busy week!  Pop back soon to hear more updates on how the centre progresses.  On behalf of everyone at HHA we’d like to thank all of our incredible donors who make this work possible!
