Life-Saving CRADLE VSA

How is one blood pressure device changing outcomes for pregnant women in Haiti? Early detection, early recognition, and quicker referrals. The CRADLE VSA device is helping selected clinics and hospitals in the Cap-Haitien area better identify high risk women.

A woman showed up at HCBH at 38 weeks pregnant. She came for a prenatal appointment. Her very first for this pregnancy. As she waited outside the clinic, the nurses began to do triage. When it was her turn, the CRADLE VSA was used to check her blood pressure and heart rate. Some numbers popped up on the screen, but so did an arrow pointing upwards and a red light. The nurse asked her to sit for a few minutes and wait, then re-checked. Red light, upwards pointing arrow. 

This pregnant woman's blood pressure was 170/120. She was having headaches and backaches. Classic signs of pre-eclampsia. When her blood pressure was re-checked, it was 190/120.

This woman went straight to receive an ultrasound and then to maternity. The OB-GYN at HCBH noted that the baby was in distress and she delivered via c-section a healthy baby boy.

"This device helps us know what is going on and what to do." said one hospital nurse. 

Another nurse shared- "I remember we had a patient that came. She had a few complaints, but nothing urgent. She was tired. Then when we checked the device, it gave us a very high reading. We kept this woman in the maternity unit because we knew this was dangerous. She stayed in the hospital until she had her baby. And we recognized this with the CRADLE VSA."

These are two of many stories showing how the CRADLE VSA is helping health professionals in Northern Haiti. By earlier detection, women can receive care more quickly. Bringing hope for better outcomes, both for Mum and Baby.
